Sr. M. Reshma of the Missionaries of Charity (M.C.), otherwise known as Mother Theresa Sisters, last Saturday celebrated 25 years in the love and service of the Lord. The Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity have established three communities in the diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada: one in the Sts. Peter & Paul parish in Hillsborough, one on St. John’s Street – St. George’s in the Cathedral parish and the newest community in Marlmount in the St. Martin de Porres’ parish - Crochu.
It was in the newest community that all the “Charity Sisters” gathered for the grand and spirit-filled celebration of one of their very own. Bishop Emeritus Sydney Charles presided at the Eucharist, along with concelebrants Fr. Gerard Paul of the Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph’s parish in Petit Esperance – St. David and Rev. Andrew Barnard of the St. Martin de Porres’ parish in Crochu. There were also friends and well wishers.
In his Homily, Bishop Charles congratulated Sr. Reshma on reaching that milestone and he also thanked the community of Sisters for their work in the diocese. He reminded his listeners that “we are all sinners” – priests, bishops and Sisters, referring of St. Paul’s words that “we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God” hence the need to remain in constant contact with God.
Using him as an example, Bishop Charles said that he has a date with God every day at 3.00 p.m. when he prays the Divine Marcy of the Rosary, because he needs God’s mercy, and so does everyone. The bishop said that we are all sent to do God’s work but we must allow ourselves to be like a pencil in His hands if He is to use us effectively.
Sr. Rashma M.C. thanked all who came to celebrate with her. The celebration of the Eucharist was followed by a social get together at which Sr. was adorned with a garlen, a crown and a bouquet along with some musical renditions all by her other Sisters.
Indian-born Sr. M. Reshma M.C. made her first profession in The Holy Father’s private Chapel in the Vatican twenty-five years ago during the papacy of the late John-Paul II. From 1989 she was assigned to Venezuela after being in Colombia, and she came to Grenada in January last. It was during Bishop Charles’ episcopate that the Missionaries of Charity first established their community in the diocese of St. George’s-in-Grenada in 1986.
