...... led to prominent Taxi Driver knifed to death
Family of Anthony Lewis, commonly called “Compañero” is the latest person to have been murdered in St. Andrew, for the year is yet to come to grips with his sudden horrible fatal death. INFORMER visited the family of the bereaved some five days later after the incident and was greeted with sad faces and the sharing of tears.
Fifty-four years old Taxi driver, Anthony Lewis, of Mt. Horne in St. Andrew, father of three children, was stabbed to death just outside the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School in La Fillette, St. Andrew last Wednesday afternoon. It is understood that the victim received two stabbed wounds with a knife to his back, one of which presumably puncture the heart.
According to relative, Lewis was on his way to collect his relatives, who are students at the St. Mary’s R.C, when he first decided to change his right front tyre on his car. He jacked up the right front side of the car to remove the tyre, while in wait for the children, with no knowledge that this was his last visit to the school and that danger, which was not far away, was going to pay him an unexpected visit, resulting in his death.
Lewis was parked on the roadside just outside the school compound some ten feet from the school, when his attacker arrived with knife in hand and requested a dollar. It is understood that the dollar was not given and this later led to Lewis being stabbed twice before he fell to the ground. His attacker later fled the scene.
The police were later contacted and the victim was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His attacker was later apprehended in the Dunfermline area. It is also understood that prior to the incident the accused has been visiting the St. Mary’s R.C school and at times demanding food from the cooks.
Even on the day of the incident one of the cooks at the school came under knife point when the accused demanded food which was later given to him. The school has been having a hard time with the accused frequenting the compound always with knife in hand; even students at the school were afraid of him. It is also understood that earlier that day the accused attacked another man in the area but he was later chased by a few men from the village.
According to the wife of the deceased, Compañero is a great lost and will be greatly missed by the entire family, even his customers. He has left a legacy to many as a good Samaritan in his field, as the most courteous taxi driver to have ever operated in St. Andrew. His eldest child is 17 years old and is a student of the T.A. Marryshow Community College. He also has two daughters one 15 years old and the other 12 years old, who are students of Secondary Schools in St. Andrew.
Compañero was a taxi driver for the past thirty-five years. He is well known by everyone as the driver and operator of Emergency express. He is also survived by three sisters and four brothers. Meanwhile Kimroy John of La Fillette St. Andrew, the accused charged with the murder of Anthony Lewis, made his first Court appearance at the Grenville Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday morning.
A charged of murder was read to him but he was not allowed to plea as the matter is an indictable one. He was remanded to custody at the Richmond Hill Prison, and will reappear at the Court on the 6 th May.
It is also understood that Kimroy was a member of either the “ginger crew” or the “bloods”. One man who also appeared before the Grenville Magistrate’s Court last Monday confessed that while he was in the same cell with Kimroy he was attacked when the accused locked his neck.
