Motorists and pedestrians alike along the Port Highway, leading to Lagoon Road, were astounded when they had to ‘duck’ from stones as students from a St. George’s secondary institution exchanged blows and resorted to stone-throwing.
It was after eight o’clock on Monday morning when passers-by stood to look on as a security officer escorted one student of the boys’ school off the compound and into a waiting jeep.
A group of forty to fifty rowdy students followed, some exchanging expletives, others throwing stones that landed across the roadway, barely missing standers-by, all of them apparently angry over an incident that had happened minutes earlier.
Informer was present and saw plain-clothed officers trying to curb what could have turned to a riot, as several students shouted their opinion and tried to loosen the hold of the security officers, while others attempted to get in a few kicks and punches.
At one stage, one of the civilian-clothed officers found himself overwhelmed by students who succeeded in causing him to lose his balance and fall to the roadside.
Getting up he ran behind one particular student who easily managed to evade him. A few minutes later two uniformed officers made their way to the school compound, seemingly to get to the bottom of the situation.
A call to the school was futile, as no-one was prepared to release information about the near-riot. ABC Foto Studio was able to capture some of the disturbance on camera and share them with us.
