..... with training initiatives
The Government of Grenada is embarking on a new training initiative to accommodate the high level and variety of investments underway and those in the pipeline.
This proactive approach will best serve the demands as well as further develop and broaden the skills of the workforce. The value of these new investments is in excess of EC $3 billion.
The Grenada Technical Vocational Education Training Programme (TVET), which is expected to commence this year, will initially focus on key areas such as construction, hospitality, and marine and yachting skills; then gradually expand to other skill area requirements.
TVET is Government’s solution for training the workforce in the shortest possible time, while at the same time ensuring the quality and sustainability of such training over the long term. Eventually, TVET will facilitate more comprehensive training programmes for workers in all sectors of the economy.
The TVET Programme is being formulated through a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Education and Labour, the Ministry of Youth Development, the Agency for Reconstruction and Development and other stakeholders.
With the imminence of CSME and the investment surge, manual skills, technical skills, and managerial skills will be in great demand.
“A skilled and adaptable labour force stands out as an indispensable requirement for continued improvements in productivity and the application of modern technology. Moreover, a pool of skilled and adaptable workers is a major asset in attracting further investments and firm security for the growth of family incomes,” Prime Minister Dr . the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell said.
Following are some of the reasons for TVET:
(1) Grenada ’s post hurricane rebuilding process is ongoing and with the new surge in investment initiatives, the construction industry must remain vibrant;
(2) The numerous hotels, condominiums, villas, and other service oriented projects to come on stream will create a major need for more hospitality training;
(3) The marine and yachting skills will better prepare our fisher-folks and boat lovers for Safety at Sea;
(4) The farming and golf course projects will create markets for farmers as well as jobs for grounds keepers.
(5) The advent of yachting will create avenues for the rigging industry, berthing facilities and associated industries.
TVET will facilitate:
An integrated, regulated and effective public-private sector training industry.
An efficient and productive labour market More competitive workplaces Safer, healthier, fairer and cooperative workplaces
This access to learning will empower more Grenadians to participate fully in a Knowledge-based economy and society, in keeping with Government’s Millennium vision.
