he national colours of red, green and yellow were extremely dominant last week Thursday as the essence of national pride and love for their country as a truly Independent nation came to this twin Isle parish for the observance of our version of celebrations in saying happy 33rd birthday.

It was one which saw the call to show patriotism receive a positive response as the Principals, Staff and members of the general public could have been seen displaying some form of national symbol.

The official ceremony began with the speeches at the Hillsborough Recreation Ground followed by the parade. Governor General, Sir Daniel Williams, told the crowd that the Nation has come a long way since gaining Independence in 1974.

He added that tourism is a very vital stay of the nation’s economy and called on residents to playing their part to protect and enhance the industry.

“Always remember that the industry that will see us through is tourism”, said the Governor General. Sir Danny added that it is important that the citizens do what ever is necessary to make the country successful and progressive.

Speaking under the theme “Enhancing Growth and Revenue, Protecting the Venerable”, The Governor General said that while as a Nation we have come a long way, he added that we still have a long way to go.

Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Hon Elvin Nimrod, called on the residents to be prepared for the challenges ahead. Nimrod said that while we are an independent nation we cannot be considered fully independent.

Against this he pointed to the support given to this country following the two hurricanes while adding that we still have to depend on other countries for several products. He added that this is the reason for citizens to grasp every opportunity to develop and enhance themselves.

Nimrod added that this country has come a long way and that everyone is now enjoying peace, stability and prosperity. Speaking to younger ones, he call on them to begin recognizing that soon they will be the ones to hold the reign for the future of the country.

The Prime Minister’s message was delivered by the Minister. It notes that the first strategic draft of this Nation’s development plan has been completed.

The Prime Minister’s message also called on everyone to face the challenges of this year as it is filled with unprecedented opportunities.

The awards were handed out by the Governor General Sir Daniel Williams, Minister Nimrod and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Bernadette Sylvester.

Members of the police force led the parade which was followed by the various schools and the schools’ drum corp. The eyes-right was taken by the Governor General, Minister Nimrod and Superintendent Dragon in front the Administrative Building.
