They are easily regarded as the most vibrant cultural group representing Grenada in the New York area, and arguably among the very best on the North American continent. Quake USA, based in Brooklyn, USA, is the current stage in an evolution that started many many moons ago in the parish of St. John, Grenada. By best accounts, it started when the Catholic church(es) of the area yielded a gem in the form of a parish choir called YouthQuake. (Link credit Genevieve Ghita - photo of current YouthQuake posing with HRH Prince Edwards in Grenada - late 2003). YouthQuake's immense talent quickly granted them the unofficial title of Cultural Ambassadors, as the group performed to rave reviews in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and beyond. Several members of YouthQuake went on to membership in the National Performing Company of Grenada (1979 - 1983). After some members of YouthQuake migrated to North America, the pounding of the Cultural Drums in their veins would only be silenced after a regrouping of their unique talent. So it was in 1988, Quake USA was born. Since then this group has grown in numbers and quality, and is today one of the most sought after Grenadian talents. Quake USA is active in events such as Church Services, Weddings, Birthday Parties, Formal Dinners and Dances. The group's repertoire is extensive and versatile, ranging from Gospel to Folk and Calypso. QUAKE USA GIVES BACK: Quake USA has been for several years diligently involved in fund-raising for the Grenada Community Development Agency (GRENCODA). It holds an annual event exclusively for GRENCODA's benefit. These funds are used by GRENCODA to provide school supplies for less fortunate children. Over the years, hundreds of children have benefited from this noble and philanthropic activity. Additionally, Quake USA coordinates with other Grenadian and Caribbean organisations for a variety of activities ranging from yearly picnics or co-sponsored barbecues, to simply supporting their functions. The group believes in giving back to the community, and always keeps that at the forefront of its goals. Medium and Long Term plans include regular CD production, owning its practice home, and becoming more fully integrated into Caribbean community affairs with its unique mix of traditional and contemporary music, song, dance, drama and poetry.
