Joe
Country (real name
Joseph Greenidge) is living
proof that countrymusic knows no limits. Far from your
typical country artist,
Joe grew up in the hills and villages of the Caribbean Island of
Grenada. His path to country music mirrors many aspects of his life.
He began singing calypso then shifted to gospel.
All
the while, Joe was listening to country greats as: Charlie Pride,
George Jones and Merle Haggard. Their music greatly influenced him.
Joe discovered that the ideas and feelings expressed by these artists
resonated with his simple way of life. It was not long before Joe
hit the road with his own unique style of country music. Wide radio
and television exposure, combined with personal appearances quickly
established his reputation as a country legend in the Caribbean
region.
Joe
eventually migrated to New York, the melting pot of many cultures.
But as a country boy he could not resist an invitation to visit
Nashville, 'the Music City',
from a fellow musician. He found his home in that city and subsequently
relocated. It was a tough choice, for like many aspiring singers-songwriters,
who come to town, Joe had no job, no friends and no business connections.
These
obstacles were no match for Joe's strong spirit, sense of humor
and positive outlook on life. His enthusiasm is infectious. Expressions
like "bless your
heart,' and "that's
beautiful' naturally flow from his tongue. A five minute talk
with him can boost your spirit for weeks or even months. Joe believes
that taking an inward and an honest look at our (inner) self enables
us to cultivate a positive out look on life.
Joe
has a burning desire to take country music to higher
and broader levels of popularity while erasing the stereotypes
it has suffered in the past. "To me country music is the best music in the history of the world.
/it's truly for everyone. The diversity of folks in my fan club
proves Hat country has no boundaries. "
Further
evidence of his desire to break the stereotype of country music
was demonstrated when Joe appeared on the popular TV program 'it's
show time at the Apollo'. He drew enthusiastic applause from the
crowd as he performed his 'Caribbean Country Boy' a selection to
appear on one of his future projects. Joe believes his television
appearance on the show helped to dispel many of the myths that hang
over country music. In the words of show host Steve Harvey "...I've
never seen this one before this is a 'monumentous' moment here you
may never see this one on the Apollo stage again, I've never heard
of a country man that's come here before..."
