BOOKS AND UNIFORM PROGRAMME:

1987 and Beyond

While Secondary School education in Grenada is nominally free, no formal tuition fees are payable, high costs of books, uniform, transportation and meals place great hardship on students of unemployed and low-income parents. Some students, though successful at the Common Entrance Examination, are forced to forfeit the opportunity for a Secondary School education due to sheer inability of the parents to meet the tremendous costs.

In response to this situation revealed by its daily work in rural communities throughout Grenada, GRENCODA in September 1987 put in place the Books and Uniform Programme which provides financial support to needy students of low income, unemployed parents. The funds EC $240.00 annually for five (5) years are used to purchase Books & Uniform. In some cases, additional assistance in defraying the cost of transport and school feeding programme are also given. This financial contribution is further supplemented by personal counseling and personal development sessions.

FUNDING:

In 1987 the Books and Uniform Programme was funded exclusively from finance raised by GRENCODA from International Agencies like Bread for the World of Germany, OXFAM and Christian Aid to name a few.

In 1989 a local fund raising committee was initiated. From a modest start in 1989 when $3,100.00 was raised from seven (7) local entities, the level of local contribution reached in 1999 a record high of EC $31,303.45, with sixty (60) entities contributing. As of December 31, 1999 GRENCODA expended EC $388,901.00 on this Programme.
