The Grenada Community Development Agency (GRENCODA) is a rural development organization, non-governmental and non-sectarian established in January 1986, its historical roots dating back to Pope Paul Ecumenical Centre.
"The Agency exists to provide guidance and support to rural individuals, families and communities to improve their quality of life. It does this by encouraging people's participation for community based initiatives which will build self-reliance, particularly among small farmers, low income workers, women and youth". The Agency also works with small businesses and Cooperatives.
GRENCODA's work is implemented by a staff of ten (10) guided by an eleven (11) member voluntary Board of Directors.
HISTORY/BACKGROUND
GRENCODA is an indigenous non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental development Agency committed to the development of Grenada's rural communities.
The Agency started in 1985, and was formally registered as a non-profit organisation under the Grenada Companies Ordinance in1986. The registered office is located on Lower Depradine Street in Gouyave in the Parish of St. John - one of the rural parishes located on the West Coast of Grenada.
The Agency exists " to provide guidance and support to rural individuals, families and communities to improve their quality of life.

GRENCODA's activities are carried out under four (4) broad Programme headings:

GOVERNANCE:
A Board of Directors which include:-

| Four (4) women representing private sector and youth |
| Six (6) men representing public servants, farmers and small business development |
| A thirteen (13) member staff which includes Programme and Administrative Staff and the Secretary General being Judy Williams. |
| Provision of Annual/Narrative and audited financial reports are circulated to partners/collaborators. |
OTHER SUPPORT:
In 1989 GRENCODA introduced an annual eight (8) day Personal Development Educational Camp during the long July/August vacation for all students supported in the Programme.
From 1990 finance has been provided by GRENCODA for exam fees also. This additional facility was made necessary as students discovered that after five (5) years of schooling their parents do not have the funds necessary to meet the cost of final exam (CXC/GCE) fees.
From 1993 support for fees and/or books to attend T. A. Marryshow Community College was provided to students who excelled at Secondary level.
In 1995 Workshops for Form 5 students, Form repeaters and Parenting was introduced as an additional component of the programme.
The objectives are:
1. To improve the ability of parents to communicate effectively with the children (students);
2. Provide additional skills for improved guidance/support at home.
3. Provide opportunity for parents to share experience as they face the challenge of Parenting. |
