Named after the Queen of Angola this gem came forth into the world on November 7 th 1983 to parents Gemma Andrews-Cole and Thomas Gilbert. They named her Nzingha Assanta which means beautiful and courageous. She is from the largest parish in Grenada, St. Andrews, where most of the food that is consumed on the island is grown.
Nzingha is the first of two children, the other being a younger brother of whom she is very fond. At the tender age of five she migrated to the United States, where, upon graduating from Kindergarten she enrolled at p .S 156 there she began to show signs of a very brilliant student. Throughout her elementary and high school years, she was placed in top classes. In junior high, Nzingha tutored other students in Mathematics. In addition to helping others, Nzingha earned many credits that would push her ahead in high school. She attended Middle College high school where she excelled academically in several subjects especially the Sciences.
A proud graduate of Hunter College where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, and a minor in Sociology Nyzingha is continuing her studies in the medical field with the objective of securing a second degree in Nursing, to become a Nurse Practitioner, leading up to a PR.D. in mental health.
Nyzingha notes that it is her main objective to return to her homeland, Grenada, some day to open a medical facility where patients can receive the proper medical caring from clinicians who genuinely respect their patients.
She volunteers at New York University Downtown Hospital, but still finds time to spend with family, whom she claims plays a major role in her life. In her spare time she loves to play video games with her little brother, Niamke, or dancing in the kitchen with her parents. When she is not with family she is trying out different kinds of food such as Japanese and Indian.
Nzingha loves the outdoors- she loves Nature and enjoys visiting museums and natural parks. She also loves playing the piano and dancing.
Her Philosophy: "Minds are like parachutes -they only function when open."
