“Land of Spice, where everything’s nice, Grenada, may God bless you!” To dancing and waving of the national flag, a packed house of Grenadians in New York, celebrated the nation’s 32nd Anniversary of Independence on Saturday February 4th, 2006, with an Awards Banquet and Ball at the Elegant Antun’s Banquet Hall in Queen’s Village, New York, until the early hours of Saturday morning. It was a touching scene, as the popular Grenadian band, Lambert and the Matadors, provided musical accompaniment throughout the evening, joined by calypsonians Randy Isaac, Val Adams and Blackman.

The 2006 Committee was chaired by Mr. Donald Matheson and arranged three major events to mark the Island’s Independence Anniversary.
Those honoured for their contributions to Grenada and the Diaspora in New York, included Ms. Eugenia R. Alexander, Mr. Alec T. Telesford, Mr. Desmond C. Jones, Ms. Karen Patrice and Carriacou & Petite Martinique 2000 Inc.

The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, in his message to the Diaspora in New York, which was delivered by HE Ruth Elizabeth Rouse, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, thanked the Grenadian communities around the world for never losing touch with their homeland.

“We know that it has not been an easy road for many of you and we know that many of you are continuing to make special efforts to support your families and friends at home. So, I must take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you for what you have done and are continuing to do for your country”.

Those in attendance at the elegant affair included, Mr. Ken Francois, Official of the Ministry of Agriculture in Grenada who updated the gathering on the reconstruction process taking place in Grenada, Hon. Allen McGuire, Consul General, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, NYC (40th District) Councilmember Yvette Clarke, (58th District) Assemblyman N. Nick Perry, Judges Sylvia Hinds-Radix (Supreme Court of the State of New York) and Sam Walker (Westchester County), former Councilmember Una Clarke, former Ambassadors Robert Millette and Lamuel Stanislaus, and a host of city officials and supporters of Grenada.

Grenadians in New York have resolved to continue to support Grenada’s rebuilding efforts and support the call for unity, to enable the Country to build back better.
